Born on 5th July 1919 in Battersea (Wandsworth, London Q3-1919 1D:759)

Son of Hannah Elizabeth GATHERCOLE (born Lakenheath 1894) who appears to have married John R CRANE (Mildenhall Q4-1926 4A:2133). The CRANEs were at Mill Road, Lakenheath for the 1939 register.

A farm labourer, husband of Evelyn Gladys STEBBEDS of Mildenhall, in Q4-1939 (Newmarket 4A:4418). Their address on his Japanese PoW card is 24 Junction Road, Mildenhall.

His will gives him as of Lakenheath and his wife had re married, to Edward John Ernest FINNIS.


Jack is believed to be the cousin of Wilfred GATHERCOLE, named on Lakenheath memorial


Jack was captured by the Japanese on 15th February 1942, at the surrender of Singapore, and died on the Thailand-Burma railway.
